End of Line (Collaboration with Moira Gavin)
2008, 4’ 33” Video.
Avonmouth / Severn Beach.
As pedestrians we found it hard to make sense of the landscape between Avonmouth and Severn Beach. There was no foot flow, we were unable to access areas, the landscape would only make sense to lorry drivers delivering and collecting or crane drivers over view or by boat.
The film takes the form of a journey in which emptiness is marked out in physical spaces created by blockages/denied access, the railway and the ever-present flow and hum of the motorway.
The focus on emptiness goes hand in hand with a melancholic sense of time passing – not a nostalgic longing for some imagined past more an acknowledgement of an inevitable process of change and one’s own mortality.
